The recent Apple Environmental Progress Report got a lot of attention, mainly thanks to the Mother Earth video accompanying the launch. In the document you might have been surprised to learn that F-gases “are one of the largest contributors of direct emissions” in the Apple supply chain:

The F-gases sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) are used in making semiconductors and flat-screen displays.  

It’s the extraordinary warming impact and longevity of these gases which mean responsible companies want to find alternatives (Nike replaced SF6 in its Nike Air trainers in the noughties). All between 6,000 and 24,000 times as warming as CO2 and last in the atmosphere between 500 and 7000  years. 

Climate-i’s work will reduce F-gas emissions – starting with HFCs and SF6 – and help accelerate the transition to cleaner alternatives.
